PaulW is as eager to paint bikesheds as the rest of us. :-)

PaulW: the number split is a good one. Verisign might not be the only implementer of the API, so we should not change the API number to keep matching their development. And, as you can see, their development is not complete for the current API, so they should not have a number that makes it look like their release is actually the same as the API.

PaulW gets the First Outsider award. Hopefully he ends up contributing more, if needed. Verisign folks: PaulW is a very opinionated security geek who wants more out of DNSSEC because he understands it very well both from protocol and operational perspectives. I say that both as a warning and a suggestion that you listen to his feature requests. I don't always agree with him, but I rarely find his suggestions easily dismissible.
